Dalla Rivoluzione Industriale ad oggi, con l’affermarsi della civiltà del ‘progresso’ e del ‘benessere’, sono inaspettatamente comparse, inizialmente nella società Occidentale e successivamente in tutto il mondo, numerose patologie croniche che hanno profondamente trasformato il mondo della Medicina e della salute. La medicina convenzionale, adeguata per il trattamento delle malattie acute, soprattutto infettive, si sta dimostrando spesso inadeguata a eliminare radicalmente le cause delle patologie croniche, limitandosi al più a mantenere il paziente in uno stato di salute precaria con il mero controllo della sintomatologia. La Naturopatia e lo Yoga, al contrario, con il loro approccio olistico nel recupero e mantenimento dello stato di benessere nei pazienti affetti da malattie di lunga durata, hanno assunto un’importanza tale da meritare la dignità di trattamenti terapeutici non solo alternativi, ma anche complementari a quelli della medicina allopatica convenzionale.

Nella prima parte della presente trattazione verranno esposte brevemente l’evoluzione nel corso del tempo e le caratteristiche delle due pratiche terapeutiche complementari. Saranno quindi presi in considerazione i risultati clinici dello Yoga e della Naturopatia riportati in letteratura, sia in un loro impiego separato che unitamente in ambito sanitario. Particolare attenzione è stata posta alla loro applicazione in tre patologie croniche ampiamente diffuse sia in Occidente che nel mondo Asiatico: le malattie non-trasmissibili, quelle correlate all’AIDS e quelle recenti associate all’infezione da Covid-19.

Nella seconda parte della tesi innanzitutto saranno messe a confronto le due Medicine tradizionali, quella Occidentale e quella Asiatica, sottolineando le loro differenze e i numerosi punti di contatto che le avvicinano più di quanto ci si possa aspettare. Inoltre saranno trattati gli aspetti etici della Medicina Complementare e Integrativa, le problematiche connesse alla formazione degli operatori sanitari, medici e no, di entrambe le Medicine, e i costi che il paziente si trova a sostenere per avere i benefici desiderati. Infine, saranno illustrati la diffusione della Naturopatia e dello Yoga, la loro regolamentazione e le diverse integrazioni con i Sistemi Sanitari Nazionali dei vari Paesi, nell’intento di fornire un quadro piú aggiornato possibile di quelli che appaiono come i due approcci terapeutici ‘non convenzionali’’ di maggior efficacia e sicurezza.
