L’Artiglio del Diavolo (Harpagophytum procumbens DC) è una pianta erbacea perenne appartenente alla famiglia delle pedialiacee, presente nell’Africa del Sud.

Deve il suo nome alle quattro “punte” dure che rappresentano i suoi frutti, queste sono dotate di robusti uncini che una volta penetrati nelle zampe o nel corpo degli animali provocano gravi ferite costringendoli a compiere una danza “indiavolata”.

Questa pianta si è dimostrata particolarmente efficace nelle situazioni che provocano dolore e infiammazione, come ad esempio tendinite, osteoartrite, artrite reumatoide, dolori alla schiena. L’efficacia analgesica e antinfiammatoria è data dalla presenza di glucosidi iridoidi, tra cui l’arpagoside contenuto nella radice della pianta.

Gli effetti collaterali sono limitati ma va comunque usato con attenzione, aumenta la secrezione gastrica e puo’ causare problemi gastrointestinali ed eruzioni cutanee. E’ controindicato anche se si assumono farmaci contro l’ipotensione e soprattutto non va associato ad anticoagulanti.

Forme galeniche disponibili in commercio sono: estratti secchi, infuso, tintura madre.
